Whilst Jori was firing up the forge in dwarven passion and hammering away with, uh, appropriated goods in the student workshop his centaur mentor failed to get his attention. Brutus, Alexander, Burley and William and (virtual) Susan visited the artists with Manticore in tow, saw him settled and partied hard and appreciated art.
Quite (at times) heated discussions about the lack of communication and whatever it is the pcs are going to do with the Manticore, and just where is it the Manticore comes from. North Africa?
Brutus's dad owns a shipyard...Brutus has written him of his adventures (despite the lack of a quality pen) and the need to borrow a ship.
A reply will be forthcoming.
Barbary pirates will be no match it is conjectured.
Pirates: "Prepare to be boarded!"
PC's: "Sure, come on!"
Manticore "Munchmunchmunch!"
Next week, a meeting with Mr Brisgow.
Burley is honing his blowpipe skills.
Leece is a Western Australian artist living in Perth, on Whadjuk Nyoongar boodjar. She likes drawing animals and is interested in sf&f, nature and kayaking, Me-Moving and reading and lots of other stuff!

Lest we forget.
Lest we forget.

At the end of The Great War, where our youth, our brightest, and best went to stand for their country, and died in their thousands, the cry amongst the world leaders was 'Never Again!'
And yet it did.
And again our youth - the brightest and best - went out to fight, and died in the widest-reaching conflict in our history.
And again, and again, in dozens of smaller wars and conflicts. Out they go, to serve, and to die, and why? To protect. Be it peacekeeping in the Balkans, police action in South East Asia, Search and Rescue, fighting against a mighty dictator bent on world domination, or even the current ambiguous actions - they go and serve, trusting their leaders that what they do is to protect. Be it our own country or the people of another.
And some pay the ultimate sacrifice. And many more return with bodies and minds and souls shattered.
And today, it is them - not the leaders sent them - who we remember. It is they who we honour, not the wars. It is they, and their brave and honourable opponents from that first Great War, which tested and forged in fire and blood the souls of three nations, who we remember. Three nations that remain bonded by our shared loss, and who all stand stronger by our shared history. We might not always agree - but we three nations - Turkey, New Zealand, and Australia - know that we share a bond that rises above our disagreements. A bond of shared loss, blood, and honour.
To the Turks and the ANZACs, we raise a salute - not to celebrate - but to remember with honour the fallen and those who survived to tell the stories of their brave and honourable foes.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
And never forget.

For the characters, the weekend pass uneventfully.
For the characters, the weekend pass uneventfully. Brutus was able to explain things somewhat to Ironhoof, with a promise to write up the events to his satisfaction...
So Tuesday rocks around and Susan, William, Alexander and Burley set off to meet the artists.Off they go in a growler, and along the way Burley manages to blow dart a gargoyle hunter and explains why to a bemused William who suggests he try the explanation (or possibly the dart) on his lecturers.
A loud trumpeting roar is heard ahead, and a few of the characters recognise the sound even though they've not heard it before - and before long the street is scattering in panic as an angry manticore comes into view.
Fortunately it is not the winged, firing missiles from its tail sort of manticore...
Susan and William rush into an alley, and Burley drops into a cellar window.
The manticore follows Susan and William who, in desparation and with their backs to a wall variously try Ancient Greek and Greek on it. It seems to understand them and a careful, if somewhat one sided conversation ensues.
Burley attempts contact but makes the manticore unpredictable, and pops back around the corner and starts whistling. He earns nearly a shilling! (He might get his legs broken though by the local beggar king) He's joined by Brutus who has tried to alert the Royal Horse Guards but was dismissed as a prankster student to his chagrin.
Susan and William emerge with the manticore walking beside them, and join up with Burley, to continue on their way to the artists. Brutus is sent off to get some meat for the manticore, and will meet them at the artists' place.
But they realise they have lost Alexander, and start looking about for him. They might have some explaining to do.

#gamejourneythursday , Curators: Clinton Coddington Jon Beall Rocio Goodey Close up of a game of Ticket to Ride: Heart of Africa. With the setting sun casting long shadows and the brightness of the railcars, quite a pretty image. I won this one by good fortune and adroitness with the terrain rules. Quite cool that. Still not as good as TTR:Europe. A much better game with stations.
This is from the new edition of Serenissima - which is a super play, even better than the old version.

Week 11: Spring or Autumn
This photo was taken during the 2013 Perth Photowalk - we are supposed to be well into Autumn here, but summer is lingering late. Still there are a few deciduous trees amongst the evergreens here, and this broken tiling I found along the way has suitably autumnal hues. Bit of an illusion here though, the myth of four seasons. We actually have 6 - at the moment Bunuru is refusing to make way for Djeran. #seeaustralia #perth2013

Hi there!
Hi there! I'm supporting a number of Kickstarters recently - Small World II, Story Realms, Sails of Glory and so forth. But one, at the moment stands out. It's a neat little roleplaying system brought out by one of my Livejournal friends and while it's nifty in itself, and has been funded, I ask you to have a look at it for this reason only...
They're at a little over $8000 at the moment.
"Stretch Goal 3: Education is a Right ($10 000)
An alternative title for this stretch goal was “Information wants to be Free”.
If we can reach a total of 10K of pledges, we will send free copies of the Spark RPG to libraries or schools. Anyone who pledges at the LEGEND tier or higher will get a chance to identify a particular school or public library to whom I will donate a copy of the Spark RPG. I will also write up a short teachers guide to help educators use Spark in a classroom environment.
Additionally, I will change the game’s license from Creative Commons Non-Commercial, Non-Derivative, to a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Attribution license (CC BY 3.0). What his means is that everyone will have an open license to change Spark and to sell any derivative works commercially if they would like.
Last but certainly not least, I will devote some additional time and expense to expand the “A Spark in Fate Core” article and release it to the world as a free PDF. This stretch goal will give me the funding necessary to expand on the content, get it professionally edited, and possibly commission a little art to jazz it up. "
Isn't that fantastic?! I feel very strongly about RPGing, I love it, and to be able to spread it out to people who might never otherwise encounter it and give them the tools to develop their own makes me very excited.
So please consider.

Last year one of the Perth gaming and SF Fan community's greats, Michael O'Brien, lost his battle with a brain tumour. He was a fantastic gamer - not because of an overpowering drive to win (although he always did his best), but because of his commitment to making sure everyone enjoyed the game.
He was influential in the founding of the Western Australian Boardgaming Association, and was always ready to teach games to newcomers.
He is greatly missed.
This year, Swancon (the Western Australian State Speculative Fiction Convention) decided to create a memorial award - "The Mikey" - for a player in the Swancon gaming steam who contributes to the enjoyment of play of others, thus embodying his memory.
The award was presented by his wife at the closing ceremony, along with one of the Meeple Vests that the gaming room hosts wore while on duty.
The winner of the inaugural Mikey was Alicia Smith, who very much embodies Mikey's nature in gaming, going out of her way to welcome, teach, and introduce people to gaming. Even if it means teaching over 70 people Tsuro. :)
