Grads with the inestimable Stephen Lee is doing Dr Faustus at the New Fortune - one performance left http://www.ticketswa.com/event/doctor-faustus
I have only ever seen it once before, I think it was at the Dolphin back in 1984 which was a very different production - very gloomy, and done with a lot of masks and costuming which made everyone except Faust look like grotesque caricatures. And even Faust wore a mask. But it made an impression.
It's a powerful play, whatever version you might view.
This is the play that has the famous line "Was this the face that launch'd a thousand ships, and burnt the topless towers of Ilium?"
It's not Shakespeare, it's Christopher Marlowe, a contemporary of Shakespeare's and influential upon his works, and really it would be good to see more of his works performed.
The original story is from an old German tale of a scholar who summons the Devil. This must have been hot stuff in Elizabethan times, some really blasphemous stuff going on - even people these days might find it disquieting. You've got talk of baby killing, you've got Satanic pentagrams and Lucifer himself appearing on the big screen amidst hellfire. You've got people being turned into animals. Considering the characters involved (not the actors, you were gems!) probably a step up.
You've got succubi - a marvelous Devil Wife and the 7 Deadly Sins - I guess Mr Lee, the Director, casting himself as Wrath knows what Directors are like, haha.
You've got Good Angels and Bad Angels.
What's disquieting is Grant Malcolm's Mephistophilis, always watching, calculating, aloof and quietly confident as Dr Faustus's soul inches ever closer to his clutches.
What's disquieting is David Meadows's Doctor Faustus's creeping uncertainty limping out from his brash overbearing joy of power and influence.
Where have all the candles gone... there were dozens at the start? Pretty creepy.
But what you also have is some of the funniest Elizabethan theatre I've ever seen during the time when Dr. Faustus, intoxicated with the power, embarks on a tour of Europe (with holiday snaps) and displays of magic and some very, very, funny practical jokes.
Great set, great lighting, great sound, great moves, great show.
Very interesting, a real contrast to Shakespeare and really well done.
9/10 Intriguing and Funny. Death reading Reaper Man to Sir Terry Pratchett, in person on the Sid and Nancy Scale.

Hunt for Supernovae live! This blows my mind really!
The images are being taken here in Australia, by the Skymapper Telescope in Siding Spring.
These supernovae are so bright that they can outshine their entire galaxy, and if they catch them
early enough then they can pass the details on to their colleagues in Chile who are standing by with a large telescope ready to follow up on your discoveries.
They’ve already found some interesting things, but with new data received
from Australia in the last few hours, time is of the essence - we have only
a few hours before the Sun sets over the Atacama desert and the telescope
in Chile will swing into action, so we need your help right now.
So if you've got a spare moment, let's go hunting!

Plenty of four leafed clovers, sure. But none of these would be suitable for St Patrick's illustration of the Trinity.

THANK YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS.
Sir Terry Pratchett will be missed.
I met him a few times and every time it was fun. He came out to Perth a handful of times for signings and for Swancon - I designed and screenprinted one of the t-shirts for Swancon - it had Great A'Tuin and all, done in fountain pen and ink, looking very old map like. Terry was asking about colours, seeing as we could print them overnight at home, to order.
"And we can do black on black"
"Black on Black?" The not then "Sir" Terry asked, incredulous.
We showed him what the puff ink did. It looked pretty swish!
Terry ordered one of those, and Lyn came and ordered others, both of them delighted. My Mum handily printed them overnight, and delivered them in the morning. They were very pleased.
At the Ascot Hotel one Easter Swancon (understand that this is Perth, Western Australia, and it gets very hot in the lead up to Easter) I was wandering through the common area when Then not then "Sir" Terry rushed up to me and dragged me outside saying "You've got to see this, come with me!"
Outside, with the Swan River snaking behind the hotel, the rain was falling down gently on everything. Terry took me by the shoulder and gestured expansively. "This is..."Rain". You're Australian so I thought I'd better let you know what it was."
After I finished laughing I let him know that it always rains at Easter. Not even quite true then, it's certainly less common now!
He seemed to find the back end of Ascot a wilderness...I suppose it might have looked that way with the reeds and all. "You expect the African Queen to come downriver!" he said.
I asked him a bit later what had happened to Tethys the sea troll, but he said that some characters have their time in the story, and then they just move on and aren't heard from again. I was a bit sad about that, I liked that character.
At the 1999 Worldcon in Melbourne we encountered Terry striding his way down the hall of the hotel, which was the old Victorian Railway Administration Building from the 1800's converted. Very tall ceilings, huge doors and hallways. "This place is built for Krell!" he quipped to us as he went by.
Later, after he was diagnosed and was back in Perth for a signing I was lining up to get The Truth signed for my journalist dad. His eyes lit up when he saw the old Swancon tshirt with the DiscWorld map I was wearing - I've no idea if it was recognition or not of my old design and he said chirpily "You've got the lot there!" and when hearing that Dad had been a journalist inscribed a special message to him on the book.
Farewell Sir Terry, you're still with us in the worlds and kindnesses you've created and the works they've inspired.

That's Sir Terry's achievement below - note the Morepork and the Ankh. :-) Wikipedia says that Sir Terry had never heard of the bird on first writing about the greatest city, but retroactively associated the New Zealand/Tasmanian species with it after finding out.

"Hi Steveg,
I hope you had a better sleep last night and your back isn't giving you gyp.
We're running a presentation on Australian Game Design and History, it would be great to have you on it to talk about the way you've seen the hobby and the games grow from when you first started playing, and the huge explosion of war games in the 70's.
I will be playing a video timeline of early Australian board games right up to the modern era, so that should provide some food for discussion and some surprises for the audience.
