"Police Puzzled"
"Police Puzzled"
The murders of two of Her Majesty's Swans by a marauding Fishwoman have been avenged by a mysterious assailant. Police were called to the incident by a woman (who declined to be named) saying that "Mysterious voices" had informed her of the altercation.
While this reporter would question this with some scepticism, several police also reported that the voices guided them to the orphaned eggs and beseeched them to care for them.
The mystery of just who killed the Fishwoman (name and address unknown) continues.
Keen fisherwoman and "Friends of the Park" committee member Miss Cynthia Sparrowsbreath is quoted as saying "This is a very old wilderness. Even those of us who know it well don't know all its secrets. Perhaps one of the unlicensed werewolves who are known to use the area as a refuge was responsible."

This is a great article.
This is a great article. Most of my memories of family Christmases when I was a child involve heat - no aircon in those days, cooking hot food indoors, rellies stressing about other rellies, BBQs in the heat and flies.
I like that one family's no stress of nachos and icecream!
Sit down with your folks or with yourself and work it out, what do you really want to do for Christmas? Me, I want to eat cold turkey, cream cheese and cherry chutney sandwiches, with coleslaw on the side and play boardgames and swim.

There's a movie coming out "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" and when we saw the trailer, we remarked to each other that it looked kind of cool. As I'm a firm believer in the roots of things (never mind that it sometimes makes me disappointed in how things are portrayed by Hollywood)I decided to do some research.
This was because my previous knowledge of the Nutcracker story was very scant.
It existed of a poster in the music room at school depicting the Nutcracker and the words "Clara's new doll was a nutcracker" and that there was a famous ballet by Tchaikovsky based on the story. Also that there was a mouse army involved, and toy soldiers in a war with them and that it was all very much a Christmas story. That's it.
So today I looked on Wikipedia and found that the ballet is not based on the original story, but on a retelling called The Story of a Nutcracker by Alexandre Dumas which was considerably lighter and fluffier.
The original story is called The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E T A Hoffmann. Hoffman was quite a guy!
I found a translation from the original German right here https://www.oldstyletales.com/single-post/2018/01/23/ETA-Hoffmanns-The-Nutcracker-and-the-Mouse-King-English-Translation . I'm deeply grateful to whoever did the work and put it up for us to read. And I read it out of curiosity but I was sucked right in. You had me at seven-headed Mouse King and proactive heroines. (shades of the rat king Terry Pratchett introduced some of us to?) A mixture of Gothic and Arabian Nights and a lot of action! It's pretty disturbing in some spots, and I would not recommend to younger children, it's wild mythic stuff happening.
It's a very mine-able resource, and lots of things are there for continuing the franchise with unfinished plots. What of the Giant Sweet-tooth?!
I might be doing Dumas's version a disservice, but I'll let it sit for a while - I'm digesting the Hoffman. Apparently The Pacific Northwest Ballet did a version that was based on the Hoffman - Maurice Sendak was involved. I would have liked to have seen that! Here's an article about it. https://www.npr.org/2012/12/25/167732828/no-sugar-plums-here-the-dark-romantic-roots-of-the-nutcracker
Me? I'm gonna hunt up some more Hoffman.

Here in Noongar boodjar our equivalent is known as kwongan and it's proving to be of great interest because it's a hotspot of botanical biodiversity. Have a read of the wikipedia article. If you've driven through the Stirling Ranges and particularly the Fitzgerald River National Park you'll be familiar with the landscape.
It's also where Wongan Hills gets its name from (over 50% of places in the South West are derived from their Noongar names.) Kwongan Katta - hills above the Kwongan.

So it's been a while since we saw Dr Who, I think our last view was Peter Capaldi and the axe duel.
We've left it for a while now, but because of this fresh look at the Doctor watched the last episode of the previous series (which was pretty cool!) and started the current season. We're all caught up now with the current.
Some plot holes of a minor sort but some damn fine happening. It has certainly been worthwhile watching so far. Episode 3 is of particular worth and highly recommended.

Originally I was going to draw a dog howling at a thunderstorm but I had another idea. It was going to take me way out of my comfort zone, and I was going to do it with the usual brush pen, where normally your technical pen or 005 micron would be more appropriate, and lots of erasing and possibly a grid. Not my cup tea usually, but hey it's Inktober and that's a licence to stuff up.
Rob Masters is a long time Thunderbirds fan, so I asked him which Thunderbird he'd like me to draw. He said "Oh, draw the one no one ever draws, Thunderbird 5!"
I hope he likes it! I think it has a certain charm.
Huh, seems I've committed fanart. Huh, that doesn't happen every day.
"Can I come down now?"
#inktober #inktober2018 #drawingwithoutanet yes that means no pencil, no erasing! (feeling it with this one)

Today has seen a lot of hedgehogs in my Inktober stream. I was originally going to draw a keythong, but they're spiky as opposed to prickly, so in patriotism I'm drawing a nyingarn as it's called by the indigenous folks here, or more commonly known as the echidna. Some of the ones I'm seeing in the Western Shield Camera Project have a nice reddy brown look to them. There have been some good echidna shots this season - check it out, they would love more cataloguers! #inktober2018 #inktober #drawingwithoutanet

Hello G+, and G+ Tribe,
Just wanted to say that I love being here at G+. I've been here since it's beginnings, and I don't want to move.
There is no other social media like G+. Especially for photographers who like to share almost daily. G+ is the best for communication; interaction is easiest, and the best!
I've really enjoying sharing here, and meeting such beautiful people.
G+ has announced that they will be closing down in about 10 months.
I have a stubborn refusal to believe this will actually happen. So I am here until G+ tells me "Marilyn You have to go now".....
Yes I am on other social medias.. Most of them I do not post regularly on except for my Instagram. On Instagram I only post phone shots of daily travels, things I snap as we are out traveling doing our everyday things.
https://www.instagram.com/marilynlouisebenham/
My point is G+ is the best Social Media site around! There are other sites, but they all lack many things , and they do not get the sharing photographer!
Thankies #G+ for this amazing place you have carved out for us. I'm asking you to please find a way to keep G+ open "as is" to us your faithful peoples. Thankies!!

Having been equipped with reasonable weapons by Anishka the noble brigade flew out into the cold November night. The were somewhat startled to encounter a gargoyle called Nevic, was it? A cautious conversation ensued resulting in apparent goodwill all round and a demonstration of Fara's loquacious talents . Continuing on it started to drizzle and shelter was sought in one of the belfries. A barn owl was encountered and subsequently defeated.
Attempts byPrickleRose Husqvana to encourage close encounters with a curious cat by donning the dead owl and shuffling around crying "come here Puss, I am a poor Birdy with a brokennwing" were unfortunately marred by Damosel Charge-it-all Rallientha scaring it off, probably just as well as it seemed a well cared for animal.
DamoselCharge-it-all Rallientha collected herself in good order, and off you all set again only to have rather more serious an encounter. Another owl, possibly the mate of the other caught Fara up in its talons and injured her.
I would be interested in accounts of your impressions of your role in the ensuing events, if any.
After DamoselCharge-it-all Rallientha recovered and Damosel Fara was healed and sang her companion into a better frame of mind, the party reconvened to Mr Fixers shop and Mead and questions as to why the stag velvet hadn't yet been obtained.
Also During this session Lady Anishka cheerfully produced an elaborate, for large work, garment to be repurposed for the greater good according to her. Enquiries as to whether it was a wedding garment met with pointed words for silence on the matter and some helpful division of the cloth for conveyance to Hawksbane.
Hawksbane then requested input from Fara as to appropriate fashions for the situation and some designs were planned out.

So, if you ever wondered what happens when the sandbar separating the ocean from the river suddenly goes, here you are. There's a lot of rivers in Western Australia which develop a sandbar at the mouth. When winter comes, the increased water breaks through. Best to be aware! These people were fortunate.

Inktober No.14 "Clock"
In my city, we have a place called London Court. A lot of people were taken to the Hay Street Mall, by their parents, and to wait to see the knights dash around and joust each other on their horses, above the face of a famous French clock I forget the name of.
Not so many would have then walked through the Tudor replica mall, to the other side to then view St George killing the dragon, above the face of a small version of Big Ben.
So, remember, if you show children the clock in the Hay St Mall, there's a Dragon and St George at the other end in St George's Tce that's also worth a look.

Noongar nyidyung koorliny,
kura, yeye, boorda) by Len Collard and David J Palmer and something Prof. Collard said really stood out for me.
*Gnarl koorliny katitjin baranginy ni: Sweat,
moving and grasping hold of this thing*
"To put it simply, unless you produce sweat on country you are not going to
find out anything about that place. This old Noongar practice of going along on
country to understand that country and its history is a useful elixir to problems
that come from spending all our time in archives and in front of our computers.
When on country we get to see things that would have been instrumental in
shaping what went on. Through listening to birds, the shape and strength of
wind, seeing the species and experiencing the climate we get a clearer idea
of how that country was used and what would have happened.
Going out on
country also helps us to see the presence of Noongar influence a little more
clearly. It is also a good way of understanding the geographical and climatic
context that confronted people. "

No.12 Whale
This is a sketch of the skeleton of the ancient whale - possibly modern whale ancestor Dorudon atrox. It hung out with Basilosaurus but didn't escape being chomped by it.

It's been an emotional roller coaster this week and taken me a little while to put my thoughts together on the news about G+.
I'm glad people are finding workable alternatives. I wish them a smooth and seamless migration. I'm not ready to leave and don't (yet) feel the need. But that may change.
I've not met Mike Elgan though I have many times appreciated his words and ideas through the years; I fully expect he would be great to have a beer with. But I profoundly (and respectfully) disagree with his conclusion:
Social is dead and we can - and should - retreat to our blog safe spaces.
(See his excellent and thought-provoking post: https://plus.google.com/+MikeElgan/posts/gNz2B2Rw7uV)
This ghettoised approach will never work for me. Nor do I think it desirable on a societal level. Is social dead? That seems dramatic, even if worth seriously discussing. We need public commons and shared spaces that are not under the aegis of our personal domain names. I feel pretty strongly about this.
Maybe in time I'll share a little bit more about my feelings and experience with G+ as an insider. But for now, the below fairly reflects where I'm at.

It's pretty cruel to semi-transform someone into a narwhal, and then hoist them up by their tail.

No.10 - Flowing
No.10 - Flowing
Flowing makes me think of water and water makes me think of the life in it. From the bizarre creatures of the Burgess Shale, to the sea scorpions of ancient sea floors, to the deep sea black smoker hydrothermal vent communities water flows. Water is life, and life is weird. At times, positively Lovecraftian! What will we find under the icy crust of Europa? Will there be Arguswhales, dolphinorcs and scuttlesquid? Probably not, but the reality might be even weirder judging from life on Earth. It's fun imagining what there might be.

Google+ is the social network that I, and countless others call home. It has a unique skillset that no other social media platform has, especially its rich and diverse community.
Today, Google announced they were going to close the platform in 10 months.
