Australia Gets Equal Marriage

8 December 2017 is a special date for Australians now; the date when equal marriage legislation became law.  We're a bit late to the party; following Ireland, Germany, England, New Zealand and North America, among others.  This is a bit disappointing because we were certainly ahead of the pack in giving women the vote.  When I looked that up, I saw it was complicated, all the states having done this at different times!  Still, I was proud of Western Australia for being the second, in 1899, after South Australia in 1894.  It was a while longer before women could stand for Parliament, in the 1920s I think, but I haven't checked that.

Some folks are muttering and complaining because our Liberal (read Conservative) Federal government is claiming the credit, with beaming smiles and dancing, when all they really did was hold things up by insisting on a postal vote first and then bowing to the inevitable.  Still, think again of women's suffrage.  I'm sure there was much bitching about how long it took and dire "The world is ending!" from detractors.

Actually, I do have some idea of how it might have been, because I have Swiss German relatives and know some of the oddities about that country, i.e. that women did not have the vote until 1973.  There was no point, the men said, because they would simply follow the voting pattern of their husbands.   The comparison ends here, of course, except that this was something once believed unthinkable.

Now, if I want to get a feel for how the detractors are reacting now, I could talk to my mother, but I don't want to.  She says patronisingly that I have to accept the views of other people.  This treating me as a child or an idiot is another reason why I don't like her, but I was actually quite shaken up by the argument we had on our last encounter.  I was primarily annoyed then because I was tired of enduring her views, the sniping at "the other side" of politics as though they were actually demonic instead of just opposing.  She knew I didn't agree with her views but seems I was meant to put up with them nonetheless and not discuss mine unless I really wanted to set her off.    I knew she'd voted no before she said it, but the reasons, beyond selfishness, confuse me.  It's primarily a thing of the traditionally religious, and my mother is not religious, only hidebound.

This is a game changer.  All of society will change with the updating of our words and our laws.  I said in an earlier post that nothing was going to change for those who still cling to the "traditional" view of marriage, meaning they will lose none of their rights.    But I wasn't entirely correct, because of course society is going to change around those people.  Is changing.   Their views, to me, are as selfish and mean-spirited as those who once enslaved black people, or declared that women were naturally subservient to men, according to the will of some ancient deity whose rules,  of course, were set out by men.

Whether it happened this way or another way, whatever obstacles people put in the path of the happening, these things in the end won't matter.   A good thing, long delayed, has finally happened and the atmosphere feels, to me, more optimistic and free as a result.

[This is my Wordpress post. Linking Wordpress with Google Plus is too much for my brain right now; it is a hot Sunday in Perth. I wrote it last night when my brain was working a little better].

And check out the construction of the monorail on the right side of the town while you're at it. If you obtain a chisel during the few adventures you're allowed to work on the monorail, you can re enter Lyle industries and chisel some graffiti.

Secondly, we're going to be attending the Star Wars screening on the 15th, so there won't be any gaming.

Australian Bird of the Year 2017

Birdie McBirdFace will not be considered!

The Guardian is running the Australian bird of the year for 2017 poll in partnership with BirdLife Australia.

The finalists were narrowed down based on recommendations from Guardian readers, Guardian staff and BirdLife Australia. Now they are calling on the public to select their favourite from the list.

The poll will stay open until 9 December, after which the winner will be announced. If you feel the best Australian bird has been ignored, an option for you to add it yourself exists.

If a write-in campaign is waged, a bird not on the shortlist could win. Birdy McBirdface will not be considered.

I don't know what to think of the new Iron Dragon.

Of the scribblies it was always my favourite. Only played it 2 or 3 times though, and my memories of actual play are dim.

I always kind of wanted it, the only scribbly that had that effect on me.

I'm not sure I like the new box art - it seems kind of muddy. A gentleman over at boardgamegeek has helpfully posted side by side photographic comparisons of the two editions.

I've recently got glasses, not much correction though. There's concerns in the forums that the new edition is less kind to deteriorating eyesight. Which is a bit silly as it had a big fan base all of whom now may be suffering deterioration of vision.

Iron Dragon came out before Ticket to Ride and its myriade variants. Will my patience for the scribbly form of game have been destroyed by the quicker Euros I've been playing for decades now?

Is it World in Flames vs Memoir '44?

What do you think?

Oh, and here's a link to an article from Game Trade Magazine.

Queen's birthday weekend here in W.A - some friends married and invited us out to the celebrations quite a way East from the coast. Very much reminded me of some of the Heidelberg School paintings and had me thinking of some of the Arthur Upfield Bony books. Extraordinary views from the top of Jilakin Rock. The east most occurrence of the Jarrah tree is here, possibly once part of a superforest ranging right the way across the State. A long drive, made fun by the Tin Horse Highway and definitely worth the drive to my mind for the sheer presence of country.

If you can count, you can help save lives.

Hi there,

We're putting the Antigua dataset on hold for the moment so that we can cover an urgent need from Rescue Global: basic information about building density in Puerto Rico. Even before post-Maria images come in, we can make maps of population density and expected damage for Rescue Global, but we need more accurate and up-to-date building information than we currently have available.

So this dataset is a bit different than the others: we are only using "Before" images, taken in the past few months, and we are only asking the first question we've been asking of the other datasets: how many buildings do you see?

We're hoping we can get through this quickly, so we're keeping the question to just basic categories of image counts instead of, for example, asking people to spend more time marking individual buildings.

With your help, we can use this information to make a map of expected damage, which will help Rescue Global decide where to focus their initial reconnaissance flights in the days immediately after Hurricane Maria, when power, phones and internet are expected to still be down throughout most of the large island of Puerto Rico.

Please continue to help at www.planetaryresponsenetwork.org.

Thank you,

Grant & The Zooniverse Team

Boosting the signal.

Boosting the signal. Did you ever wonder what it was like to be John Tracy in International Rescue? Do it for real. You'll be the eye in the sky. Look at photos and get the information to help the rescue teams on the ground. Don't worry, there's a short tutorial to help you!

Hi there,

The Zooniverse relaunched The Planetary Response Network yesterday in response to Hurricane Irma and rescue efforts in the Caribbean. We’ve now uploaded a third set of images with much higher resolution, and we need your help to go through them as quickly as possible.

Hurricane Irma has brought large-scale destruction to many islands over the last few days. By analysing satellite images of the stricken areas you can provide invaluable assistance to rescue workers in the Caribbean. Rescue Global are a UK-based disaster risk reduction and response charity who are deploying a team to the Caribbean and will use the information you provide to help them assess the situation on the ground.

Note: we’ve set up two workflows, one where you can quickly remove unclassifiable images from the subject set and the other to tag classifiable images with areas of need. We've also fixed the issue with the zoom tool.

Please continue to keep a close eye on the project after classifications are complete. We’ll keep adding more images as they become available over more of the region.

Join the effort now at www.planetaryresponsenetwork.org.

Thanks,

Grant & The Zooniverse Team
