This is Penguin Island, a 5 minute ferry ride from the Western Australian mainland. You might even see people wading or swimming there along the sandbank that connects to the mainland but this is not recommended! There have been deaths as recently as 2010.

It is a lovely kayak or ferry over, though - and Shoalwater Bay is a fascinating area.

You might encounter sealions and dolphins.

To the left, tourists make their way down the boardwalk. Silver Gulls, Australian Pelicans and Caspian Terns are nesting on the island at this time, and soon the Bridled Terns will come and kick the Gulls off.

  3. I guess it would look like a tip now if they hadn't, judging from some of the bogan behaviour I see around.

  4. no it was well regulated.  i'm sure some people caused trouble but i never saw that in any of the times i was there. But attitudes changed and suddenly you were no longer able to stay there. I'm sure there were all sorts to environmental reasons thrown up real and made up.but it was still a fun place to stay.
