This is Penguin Island, a 5 minute ferry ride from the Western Australian mainland.

This is Penguin Island, a 5 minute ferry ride from the Western Australian mainland. You might even see people wading or swimming there along the sandbank that connects to the mainland but this is not recommended! There have been deaths as recently as 2010.

It is a lovely kayak or ferry over, though - and Shoalwater Bay is a fascinating area.

You might encounter sealions and dolphins.

To the left, tourists make their way down the boardwalk. Silver Gulls, Australian Pelicans and Caspian Terns are nesting on the island at this time, and soon the Bridled Terns will come and kick the Gulls off.

Over on Penguin Island the huge digging machinery dwarfed the baby gulls.
The machinery wasn't there for environmental destruction though, it was just clearing sand from around the jetty that had been preventing the ferries from landing.

Making photography simple. No, really. Most people will have never even been in a darkroom and processed their own negatives and prints. This might look tricky but it's a synch compared to what enthusiasts and professionals used to do. I don't really miss the chemical smells...

This one was a shoo-in for "Up", as a Silver Gull ( Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae ) steals fire from the sun to warm the Earth.
Quite appropriate as we're approaching the warming part of Spring here - Sprummer or Kambarang.

Lovely crocheted unicorns by Jo K Inman saunter across the dashboard, while the Indian Ocean crashes softly behind. I thought the fenceposts behind could reflect the "In a Row" theme too. After I'd taken the photo, admittedly.

I probably could have waited for more dramatic skies, but I'm eager to get on with the challenge, and I thought the HDR brought out the line of hazy cloud approaching Scarborough Beach quite well.

It was a late Sprinter, early Sprummer Sunday afternoon, the surf was very broken up, but there was a strong wind so there were a lot of kitesurfers out there.

Sunny Sunday Afternoon. Jo K Inman 's unicorns enjoyed the ride.

I'm terribly behind on the weekly photo project, largely due to the rule of thirds, I had an idea I wanted to do for it and executing it was also a little more trouble than I was willing to take at the time.

Well, this week I've been sick and not able to do much, and found myself with a Sunday where I was still recovering, but could do a bit of photography. Rob Masters kindly put together the paper and lines for me, and I set out the unicorns, which, btw were crocheted by the hardworking Jo K Inman
So I'm on a catchup bing, and I've been down to the sea, and taken a lot of catch up photos - I'll only be 3 behind once I get this lot up.

Thanks to the wonderful Jo K Inman for bringing this to my attention!

Welcome to Night Vale comes to the stage in Australia and New Zealand next year.

I listened to the first episode of this intriguing radio show / podcast whatever you want to call it the other day. Very interesting! I'm looking forward to February!

And remember:

"The City Council announces the opening of a new dog park at the corner of Earl and Sommerset, near the Ralph’s. They would like to remind everyone that dogs are not allowed in the dog park. People are not allowed in the dog park. It is possible that you will see hooded figures in the dog park. DO NOT APPROACH THEM. DO NOT APPROACH THE DOG PARK. The fence is electrified and highly dangerous. Try not to look at the dog park, and, especially, do not look for any period of time at the hooded figures. The dog park will not harm you."

Cirque du Soleil is playing in Perth with their show Totem.

As a first time experience of this famous troupe I was blown away by the skills of the performers. The fliers were fantastic - but the rug spinners and especially the women on the 3 metre tall or so unicycles throwing bowls onto each others heads with their feet While cycling backwards. Really took the cake for me.

The lighting and effects were extraordinary too, with the tide coming in and out, and the spectacular costumes and sets.

The clowns were non scary and very funny - skilled too, I especially liked Misha and his  musical piece.

9/10 Highly recommended and finding yourself in the middle of The Carnival of Cultures in zero gravity on the Sid and Nancy scale .
