Thanks to bek I have been pummelling some virtual clay for the past evening, runnning Sculptris under Wine. This started off as a sphere. By pummelling, pinching and drawing it is starting to look a bit like a centaur...needs some work yet.
But, yeah, coming along, and not bad for my first attempt at anything virtual 3D.
Gods I hate showing works in progress. Good for me, right?

Is interesting for us plebs who haven't a clue :)
ReplyDeleteTold you if I could get it working under Wine someone who knew what they were doing would have no problems ;)
ReplyDeleteDid you find the symmetry mode?
Also read the manual, some of the tools have alternate modes that may help with specific things that you're doing.
Keep showing works in progress, it's definitely taking shape :D
Yes, I'm using the symmetry mode. It does crash now and again but maybe I need to free up a bit more working memory. Thanks for the tip about the manual, I'll have a look. Yes, this is definitely the way to go - it gives you a sphere and then you just poke it with your mouse to shape it.
ReplyDeleteI've found those programs always use a lot of resources so constant saving is a good idea.
ReplyDeleteIv'e found there is nothing quick about 3d modelling once you start getting down to a detailed model.
The first time it crashed I was horrified, but it recovers most of what I was working on which was a welcome surprise.
ReplyDeleteI find myself just wanting to grab a bit of clay...
The autorecover is pretty good, saved 7yo's models a few times :) She had Debian on her laptop, now has Ubuntu Studio, and running Sculptris under Wine. Most of the crashes I had on my Mac were caused by failing to delete what we've started calling a "load bearing point" on one of my imported models :)
ReplyDeleteps - my 7yo saw your centaur-in-progress and asked me to reinstall it for her :)
