Mutter, mutter, calls itself a gamer's game, mutter, calls itself a eurogame, so why is Five Tribes is four player, not five player, hmmm, answer me that? Looks cool though.
Ah, Samuel Hinz I was just a bit miffed that Days of Wonder is going on about their new game 5 Tribes being a "Gamer's Game" when really the great variety of eurogames - designer games are 5 player. Think of the classics like El Grande and Settlers of Catan are 5 player. 5 Tribes is 4 player. I'm also wondering if they're going to bring out expansions as a marketing excercise. I've seen it happen even more nastily, older games remarketed as 4 player versions when originally they were 6 player, and then an expansion for 6 player comes out, mutter mutter.
"Designed by Bruno Cathala, Five Tribes builds on a long tradition of German-style games with wooden meeples. In a unique twist on the now-standard “worker placement” genre, the game begins with the meeples already in place – and players must cleverly maneuver them over the villages, markets, oasis and sacred places tiles that make up Naqala. How, when, and where you displace these Five Tribes of Assassins, Elders, Builders, Merchants, and Viziers determine your victory or failure."
Kingdom Builder went down the expand to 5 players route. I just picked up Bruges and that is 4 players, it feels like it could handle more. I guess it's all about price points. Caverna plays 7, but you pay for it.
I don't understand the question
ReplyDeleteYeah that seems to be a trend as of late. 4 instead of 5 player games :-(
ReplyDeleteThere are several trends of recent that I'm NOT a fan of for games coming out. 4 player maximum games are one of them.

ReplyDeleteCatan is 4 player without expansion!
ReplyDeleteI got confused by the mutter, mutter. I thought hats was the name of the game. I understand now.
ReplyDeleteOh... geez, that shows how long it is since I played Catan!
ReplyDeleteI'm more confused why it's called 5 tribes when 4 player. Why not 4 tribes?
ReplyDeleteGood name for a game!
ReplyDeleteMutter Mutter the Game of Grumpy boardgamers. Can you design a game that pleases EVERYONE?
