Shaun Tan 's masterpiece of visual poignancy is given even more life by The Spare Parts Puppet Theatre.
Shaun Tan 's masterpiece of visual poignancy is given even more life by The Spare Parts Puppet Theatre.
The wordless and quite beautiful production is a mixture of acting, puppetry, animation and Tan's surreal and delicate imagery, seamlessly integrated with a truly exquisite score by Lee Buddle. I'd love to hear it again and hope it becomes available to purchase, because it was amazing.
The story of Aki, fleeing his homeland in search of peace and a happy life for his family is one of the most moving I've experienced. The alien world into which Aki, masterfully portrayed by Ellis Pearson with superb physical pathos and comedy, is one that is truly alien to all of us, not just the migrant Aki. But the positive aspects shine through in universal language - as do the negatives. The terrible threat from which Aki is fleeing is not understandable, but is frightening nonetheless.
The puppetry and supporting characters by Alicia Osyka, Adrienne Patterson
and Shirley van Sanden added humour and solid support. The moment shared by Aki and his landlady was very moving as he learned about her history.
The bird letters were an audience favourite.
The audience at the performance I attended was mostly children. Spellbound, intrigued and entranced, as were the adults. A nice touch with a question and answer session at the end where very small children asked very intelligent questions.
10 out of 10 extraordinary and a musical box made of stained glass and dreams playing that tune you loved as a child but had forgotten as an adult on the Sid and Nancy Scale.
Go see the play. It's on here in Western Australia at the Dolphin Theatre 1 -15 July

Well, there was a bit of nice warm sun there for a bit, but now comes the rain.

It occurs to me Rob Masters that we missed an opportunity for endless puns when you were persuading the arachnid population out of the funnel and trapdoor of the rain gauge sensors last night.

If you live in Australia and get parcels delivered to your home, chances are you've heard of Chullora.
If you live in Australia and get parcels delivered to your home, chances are you've heard of Chullora.
Chullora is where the Australia Post Teleportation Facility is. Although, one wonders why they don't just use conventional means of transport - it must be more economical.
I don't know how many times I've seen my package's tracking number zig-zag speedily across the globe, then Australia, and then stop dead in Chullora. And wait, and wait - there's one been sitting there 5 days now.
This is because teleportation takes up a lot of power - and they need to crank it up. Think the wave motion gun from Star Blazers level of power. So the power builds and builds. They have to be careful with the grid and might work with the power companies to keep some sort of balance, I can only conjecture about the logistics of it all.
The bulk lot of packages that they send around the country builds and builds too, with mine at the bottom it seems.
Then they finally push the big button, throw the switches and do that thing with the plunger, and your mail appears at the door, very quietly. And you'll get an email notification an hour or two later saying that it's been delivered. When there's a heavy load they save power by doing a bulk lot to the local post office.
So if you hear a rustle at your door, and there's a package but no sign of a postman, that's probably because there hasn't been one at all. It's not that your postie didn't knock, it's just that Chullora has just hit the switch.
