  1. WTF?!! They can't really be serious to think they can do that ... can they?

  2. They've already got some satellite space and discrete solar groundstations, so why not?

  3. So, how long is that "forever" going to last from the minute that Al-Quaeda puts up a cubesat containing howto terrorist manuals? Or that Child pornography ring sponsors a cubesat to provide their choice of educational pictures? Or the advertising corporation sends up a cubesat to ensure that all Lantern users get their share of sponsored glossy brochures downloaded? Or , or , or, I could go on for hours.
And what if I dont like their music? What is the music thing about anyway?

  4. The Lanterns are configured to talk to a specific set of satellites under the control of the Outernet foundation. So while it would be possible to hack them to talk to other providers, do not underestimate the challenges of lofting into high orbit transmitter assets. The cheap cubesats only have a life of a few months in LEO.

  5. But that won't be built in the Lantern otherwise Outernet wont ever be able to add a new satellite. The Lanterns will likely recieve from anything that offers the correct protocol and encryption (if it has encryption). Can Outernet maintain the kind of industrial strength security they will need to protect their channels?

  6. As I said, they could be hacked. And it would not be hard to. It is the transmitter end that is hard. Space assets, even cubesats, are not easy to launch undetected.
