The Perth Royal Show fireworks display was worth the price of admission. Reminded me of some of the Group F work.

So this weekend was spent in Adelaide, attending ConCentric Games Convention, where we had an absolute ball.

Two days of full-on gaming at the Burnside Community Centre, where we got to meet a whole lot of very friendly gamers, and play a whole lot of great games.

Woke up after a nap. There is a gf aware mexican restaurant attached to the hotel so not moving far for dinner we!

Well we were able to check in early, then walked to the nearby Burnside Village.

Well we were able to check in early, then walked to the nearby Burnside Village. Had lunch but not wonderful gf. From there we caught the bus to Adelaide and have raided the wonderful Adelaide central markets for supplies. Now we are taking a breather at a cafe before bussing back to the hotel.

Why hello Adelaide!

Just reminding everyone that there is no RPGing this week as we will be in Adelaide. What will you do with your Friday night? We will be staggering around Adelaide, blinking at the strangeness and trying to find somewhere to eat.

A Piratical Sabbatical

A Piratical Sabbatical
or The Students in an Adventure with Coconuts
or MechaCroc Vs. ????

Whilst recovering from the events of the day Burley, William, Susan and Brutus notice that the climate seems quite warm, although there is a cool breeze blowing from the bay.

Burley does a bit of rushing around, the end result is, is that there is a slightly bemused Persian in the possession of a note and drawing of a certain ship.

The beach has turned white and sandy, and all along the bay hundreds of coconut trees have appeared, some heavy with fruit. The sounds and smell of the city behind them have been muted. In the bay there are some decidedly old fashioned looking vessels of an eccentric nature - there’s even vessels with the distinctive fan shaped rigging of the seas of Cathay.

A number of very piratical looking people are gathered on the beach, looking at a vessel in the shape of an enormous mechanical crocodile, together with articulated jaws and tail! moored at a jetty.

“It’s discriminatory, is what it is.” Mutters a piratical type to his mate as he and his mates are apparently regected - too old it seems, for The Captain's purposes.

The Captain is seeking a crew and there is quite a queue - many sailors seem very eager to join, or even just to have the opportunity  to speak with The Captain. He is a well spoken man in quite a restrained dark uniform, with a long coat. He has lost his left hand at some point and wears an iron hook as a replacement.

He asks if any of the students attended Eton, and is wearing cufflinks with this device -Azure, a lion rampant argent, crowned or,impaling Gules, an orle argent, which some of the students identify as being Balliol's achievement.

The Captain offers the students a place. The Jolly Roger's clockwork tail is a major means of propulsion and he needs winders and lookouts., As his mission is to deliver invitations to the various inhabitants of "Neverisle" he needs people of sufficient youth not to be an affront to Neverisle, as he will be staying mostly on his ship.

As 15 ships in the past have been lost in the past few years (although the crews saved, and eventually sent back with apologies, but no regrets by the mysterious captain who says he's nobody of the undersea swordfish shaped vessel), it's considered that The Captain's orichalcum clad ship, with her retractable masts and great orichalcum deck covers, and her speed too, even with no wind, will at least be a match for the devastating underwater vessel.

The students are assured that they will be returned in time to catch their train - however many weeks may pass! and that while, of course there is some danger, the Captain gives his word that he will make every effort to return them safely. "Even my own worst enemy will agree that once given, I have never broken my word. It would be of the poorest form to do so!"

The students agree, and The Captain introduces himself as "Captain James - pirating days behind me - a privateer, I can show you Letters Of Marque from any country you can name!" and tells them to return within two hours, so they go off and amuse themselves with snake dancers and jerk chicken up at the settlement at Landfall.

Then they return to the ship and are shown around her marvels. Steam in the galley, and the great winder, regulator and movement. The masts telescope and can be retracted, and the entire ship can be clad - the deck and sides entirely.

She's a very clean vessel and cuts through the waves with barely a roll.

Set sail for NeverIsle!

Remote cameras in the Antartic take photos of nesting penguins, 4 species. It's up to us to tag them, all while staying warm and safe at home.

Penguinwatch says "Penguin populations are declining but the harsh conditions of the Antarctic make monitoring them logistically challenging. Researchers from around the world have established a remote camera network to monitor penguin colonies across the Southern Ocean. By tagging images from these cameras on Penguin Watch, you can help scientists understand how and why penguin populations are declining – and how to best protect them.

Penguins play an important role in the Antarctic ecosystem and are
considered sentinels of change – any variations in penguin dynamics may reflect larger changes to the environment. Climate change, fisheries, disease, and pollution are all prime suspects in driving penguin population decline. Penguin Watch will help the researchers understand more."

The book I was talking about on Friday was The Prefect, by Alistaire Reynolds - I don't think it was the one you were talking about Gaz - was it Walter Jon Williams you were talking about.

I see that he has Metropolitan for 99 cents at the moment at Smashwords and various sites about.I've bought it. I've read his Surfacing short story, which I loved and The Crown Jewells I think, I know Rob has read that.

James Nicolls says of Metropolitan "I suspect Williams is cursed being too good for his own good – even his attempts to churn out mindless MilSF have been suspiciously ambitious. It is a rare author who innovates without being harshly punished for their transgression; reliable commercial success lies in producing works familiar enough not to challenge the reader much, while being just different enough from what came before to avoid plagiarism lawsuits. Williams appears incapable of the necessary levels of mediocrity for grand popularity in his chosen genre.
I have two good pieces of news for people who want to explore this work. The first is it is on sale right now, for $0.99, but the sale will be over soon so don’t hesitate. The second is that there is a sequel to this book and it is if anything even better than Metropolitan."

Excerpt from my Dreamwidth journal entry.

Excerpt from my Dreamwidth journal entry.

On Friday it was the last role playing session at Rob's parents' place in Sydenham Street. Perhaps in response to the need to rage against the dying of the light my rpg-ers really gave it a good send off.

My favourite part was when the Cool Cousins - young Alternate Victorian Magical London students from good families and well brought up, butter wouldn't melt, have nothing to do with intrinsic magic William and Susan come in and relate their experience of a vision to the rest of the party.

Dwarven shaman, Jory, has for the past couple of nights pushed himself to the brink with exhaustion, substance abuse and deep meditation to achieve the same thing. He intones with the deepest of righteous outrage
- bearing in mind that the Cool Cousins are well scrubbed, and fashionable, and one of them has the Collected advantage. The young shaman... is none of these things.

"*YOU* had a vision??!!!!!" Shock, disbelief, and outrage from our young shaman.

The session had a lot of good energy, and good decisions. There was the possibility that some of the party could have been very badly injured or even killed at one point, and amazingly it was the gung-ho ones (both players and their characters) who were most likely to have done something - unwise - who made the sensible decision to get reinforcements.

Sorry you couldn't be there, Steveg, we were thinking of you!
