Tim and Bronwyn invitation: You are invited.
So there will be gaming, but at Tim and Bron's.

Greetings All and please be welcome to the Fifth Annual Brocon.

This year, Brocon will be held from 2pm on Friday 27th to Sunday evening 29th, with options to stay until Monday morning for those who have a day away from work (you lucky, lucky things).

Brocon is an invite-only event, due to needing to fit everyone into our home but you are welcome to invite friends.

What is Brocon?
Brocon is a gaming weekend held at Tim and Bronny's place in Brookdale,
which is about two kilometres from Armadale. Amusingly, you can find us on 4Chan and Google Maps as:
    - Bronny and Tim’s House of Games
and - House of Games and Fun

It is a fully catered weekend, with breakfast, lunch and dinner provided,
although participants are welcome to volunteer to run a meal. The hosts will
not be providing junk food, please bring your own and be prepared to share
with the hoards. Soft drinks however can be created on our soda stream.

During the day, we game. Got something you want to play? Well, now is the
time. By gaming, this is generally board, card or strategy but there is a
Wii in the garage for other gaming. I just got a copy of Halfling Heist, Inflitration and Pirate drinking game Dread Curse

Evenings are more varied. In the past we have gamed, rock banded, disc
golfed, movies, cards and conversation. Personal preference folks. I do love a good viewing of Rare Exports to get into the Christmas spirit.

The outdoor gaming area is ready for use with wind-spinning umbrella, big table and paddle pool.

Accommodation
Contact us as soon as possible if you would like to stay overnight across
Brocon, as we will need to work out where and on what you would be sleeping. Outdoors, under the stars, in the cool is a totally valid option.

Cooling
As it is summer,  cooling is a consideration. It gets hot in Armadale when the doctor does not come in. If you wish to bring additional cooling units, that sounds like a good idea.

Paddle pool available for use, so if you are interested, bring your bathers.

Where are We and Transport
4 Grafham Road, Brookdale.

We have paved parking for 5 to 6 cars plus street, lawn and verge parking.

For public transport, we are a 15-20 minute walk from the Armadale Train
Station. The 250 bus stop is within a minutes walk. the 435 and 420 will cut off ten minutes of the walk, but you need to get out at the park, or you can take
the 420 and get off just before the Eighth Avenue turn. Or call for a pickup,
its like 2 minutes down the road, no problem.

So Are You Attending?
We would appreciate being told if you are coming and when, so that we can
ensure that the meals are correctly planned. Also, if no one turns up, we are heading down south for honeymoon, so PLEASE let us know if you are coming.

If you have allergies, particular dislikes (e.g. capsicum) or am vegetarian,
please let us know.

Last year we were fostering cats for the Cat Haven. Over the last year, we have adopted Bruno the Great. He is shy but lovely. At the moment we are fostering Raven and her four kittens.

We look forward to seeing you

Bronwyn and Tim

An Evening on the Green. Hoodoo Gurus was the big name but there was a whole bunch of others.

An Evening on the Green. Hoodoo Gurus was the big name but there was a whole bunch of others.

This was on at Kings Park on Saturday 16th November.

Present were Rainy Day Women, Dave Grainy, The Whitlams, You Am I, and the Hoodoo Gurus. And about 6000 people enjoying themselves.

Ticketmaster sent me an invitation to review, but I'm not really understanding their T&C, so I'll do it here where I'm not signing away anything.

I know the Hoodoo Gurus were the big attraction, but the Whitlams really stood out for me. Everything else something of a bonus, it was well worth going.  We were seated on the bank, everyone was having a super time and there wasn't any unpleasantness that I noticed. Security was highly visible and not abrasive. We had our picnic, drank our coffee and enjoyed the show very much.

Two gripes - this was a really male dominated show. One super woman drummer and one woman singing one song (very nice too) seems wildly out of balance!

It would have been nice to be able to find out what take away food options were available at the venue beforehand - JD's never got back to me when I asked. While we had a very nice gluten free picnic hot food would have been a nice option. But when I rang to find out what gluten free options there might be, no one called me back. When we got there they had Mexican and Hot Spuds, which I believe would have been alright.

But as for the performances - super show and well worth it.

As for the seating, wasn't an allocated seat, it's just a patch of grass. Why I give it 5 stars is because really, you get just as good a view as anyone in a real seat, the sound was fine, and it's a LOT less expensive and has potential shade if you're arriving early, which of course you should do, to get the shade.  You get more room and you can bring your esky.

8 out of 10 and ice cream with sprinkles on top in a shady patch after the bbq on the Sid and Nancy scale

Karen's Facebook entry today "Karen Babcock enjoyed 5 days of playing board and card games at http://kintru.com/content/about-sasquatch, which involved being upright for 12 - 15 hours a day and generally being up until 2am or so. Not bad, considering that I haven't used the bi-pap machine at all for 10 days. So much for the prediction that I would have to use the machine every night for the rest of my life. ;-)"

So we're just back from the join Nik Kershaw/Kim Wilde show at the Astor. This was the last show of the tour, and what a show it was.

Nik opened with Wide Boy, and proved that not only is he one of the most accomplished songwriters of the 80s, but that he can still wow a crowd with his performing skills. He followed with a a wide selection of his more famous tracks - making mention along the way of another concert series he did that consisted of the entirety of The Riddle album. He slow played a few of his more recent songs, including a very moving piece call The Sky is the Limit. He wound up with his greatest hit, Wouldn't It Be Good, to resounding applause. Although remembered as a keyboardist in the 80s, he played guitar during the show, and he can shred with the best of them!

After his set, there was an intermission, and Kim Wilde came out, with the same band. Exactly the same band. This meant that her lead guitarist was Nik! She sang a huge set, covering her hits (including some unexpected ones, like Cambodia) and a number of covers, including Wonderful Life (Black), and I Touch Myself (Divynils) - which was a worthy memorial to the late Ms Amphlett.

For part of the of the set most of the band took a break, leaving the backing vocalist and the second guitarist (now playing acoustic guitar) with Kim on stage. This is when she told us a little more how her career works. The backing vocalist was Scarlett Wilde, her niece by way of her younger brother, Ricky - the second guitarist! Ricky is also her songwriter and producer. Then the rest of the band came back, and she proceeded to rock the house down, ending to thundering applause with Kids in America.

For an encore, Kim and Nik did a duet, which was very well received.

Both are stunning professionals, and have remained great performers. Ricky and Nik continue to create fantastic music, while Kim is a great singer with extraordinary range and a stunning performer. Meanwhile, Scarlett Wilde is someone to look out for - that apple has not fallen very far from the tree at all!

All in all a fantastic concert and well worth it. 10/10 and the all your best memories of the 80s are untarnished by reality on the Sid and Nancy scale.

For the few of us who waited long enough at the stage door, Kim and Nik did pause to sign some memorabilia (including several vinyl LPs) and to have photos taken on their way to the car back to their hotel. They were very gracious about it, and were happy to chat (if only for a couple of minutes).

From Karen's facebook page:

Karen Babcock is finally home, only about 130 days later than planned. Yes, as in my house and everything! I am tubeless (feeding tube was removed yesterday morning), breathing on my own during the day, and using a bi-pap machine to give my muscles a rest overnight. I have LOTS of mail and stuff to catch up on, and I'm not sure what my energy levels will be for a while, so ask potential visitors to hold off for a little while, please.

Yesterday Craig said "Karen is no longer tethered to machines. Tube removed from throat, she's been breathing for herself all day."

She's also been eating solids for a few days by herself.

Craig also says:

"But she plans to be back for Swancon and Continuum, if possible. (The head of ICU said it would be hard for Karen to get back into the country after he discussed the cost of Karen's stay with Immigration, but not any of the medical aspects, as that would breach privacy. Sounds to me like "privacy" being an excuse for not discussing incompetence, an old trick pioneered by the banks.)"

You won't see this ad on Channel 10, 7 or 9. Perhaps you'd like to see it here.

GetUp says

"Channel 10 said outright on the phone that they wouldn't run the ad because it criticises another media outlet. Lachlan Murdoch is on the company's board. We're sure the two are totally unrelated.

Channel 7 refused the ad because "the creative execution was considered distasteful and potentially offensive to our audience, so we have decided to make a stand." So noble. We created a new version of the ad with the 'offensive' bits blurred out. They didn't respond.

Channel 9 at least approved the ad, and ran it for four days. In fact, 615,800 people have already seen it on 9 across Brisbane. On Monday, they pulled the ad, and blamed it on a "coding error," saying it never should have run. Whoopsadaisey."

A reminder to those that have it from the Naga Saga - "the characters may now call light once a day - a small, floating glowing sheaf of jewelled brazen wheat (the grain heads appear to be tiny rubies) which may be directed within 1 metre of the caller, illuminating a three metre radius with a soft glow. The light will last for  115 minutes unless extinguished by the command of its caller. There is no substance to the wheat, one may pass one's hand through it. It feels pleasantly warm, like a rock in the sun on a spring day."

Dear Ms Gillard

Dear Ms Gillard,

The 27th Prime Minister of Australia has carried the office with grace, fortitude and strength.

Rarely has a politician stirred such proud feelings in me - I have viewed most Prime Ministers with resignation and at times despair or frustration.

I might not agree with all of your policies but it is with the greatest respect that I thank you for carrying the office as you have done.

Thank you, you were awesome. You said things that needed to be said and you got a huge lot of good work done.  I am sorry about the creeps.

With the greatest respect and gratitude,

Alicia Smith
You're my kind of Prime Minister.
